Shopify Products Not Showing on Google? 12 Causes and How to Fix Them (2026)

Updated September 2026 · 12-minute read · By the RankingRider team

TL;DR - Key takeaways

  • First check the basics: password protection, the Online Store sales channel, and whether the product is still a draft.
  • Next, look for noindex tags (from apps, theme code or the seo.hidden metafield).
  • Most "not indexed" cases on healthy stores come down to thin or duplicate product content - Google crawls the page but doesn't consider it worth indexing.
  • Run a free SEO audit on an affected product to spot missing meta tags, H1 issues and alt text in seconds.

60-second diagnosis

  1. Search Google for site:yourstore.com/products/your-product-handle. No result? The page isn't indexed.
  2. Open Google Search Console > URL Inspection, paste the product URL, and read the status.
  3. Match the status to the cheat sheet below and apply the fix.

The 12 most common causes (and how to fix each)

1. Your store is password-protected

Symptom: the whole store is missing from Google.

Fix: in Shopify admin go to Online Store > Preferences and remove the storefront password once you're ready to launch. Search engines can't crawl a password-protected storefront.

2. The store or product is simply too new

Symptom: new products don't appear yet, but older ones do.

Fix: submit yourstore.com/sitemap.xml in Search Console, then use URL Inspection > Request indexing for your most important products. Link new products from the homepage or a collection.

3. The product isn't published to the Online Store channel

Symptom: the product URL returns a 404 or the product is missing from your sitemap.

Fix: open the product, check its status is Active, and make sure the Online Store sales channel is selected under Publishing.

4. The seo.hidden metafield is set

Symptom: one product is missing from search and from the sitemap.

Fix: Shopify supports an seo.hidden metafield that hides a resource from search engines. Check whether an app or an import set it, and remove it.

5. A noindex tag was added by an app or theme edit

Symptom: URL Inspection shows "Excluded by 'noindex' tag".

Fix: view the page source and search for noindex. Remove it from theme.liquid or the app settings responsible. Review apps installed around the time traffic dropped.

6. Thin or duplicate product content

Symptom: "Crawled - currently not indexed". Very common with supplier descriptions shared by many stores.

Fix: write a unique title, meta description and 150-300-word description for each product. This is exactly what RankingRider automates: it generates optimized content and scores it from 0 to 100, so you can fix dozens of thin pages in one CSV run.

7. Weak internal linking

Symptom: "Discovered - currently not indexed" - Google knows the URL but isn't prioritizing it.

Fix: link important products from collections, the homepage, blog posts and related-product blocks. Orphan products (not in any collection) are the most likely to be ignored.

8. Duplicate URLs and canonical confusion

Symptom: "Duplicate without user-selected canonical" or many "Alternate page with proper canonical tag" entries.

Fix: the second is normal on Shopify. For the first, make sure your theme outputs a canonical tag and that internal links point to /products/handle rather than /collections/x/products/handle.

9. Custom robots.txt rules blocking products

Symptom: "Blocked by robots.txt" on product or collection URLs.

Fix: Shopify's default rules block cart, checkout and search pages - that's fine. If you edited robots.txt.liquid, check that no rule matches /products/ or /collections/.

10. Changed URL handles without redirects

Symptom: old URLs show "Not found (404)" or lost their rankings.

Fix: when you change a product handle, keep "Create a URL redirect" checked, or add redirects under Online Store > Navigation > URL Redirects.

11. Sold-out or near-empty pages

Symptom: "Soft 404" or pages dropping out of the index.

Fix: keep sold-out product pages live with full content, a back-in-stock signup and links to similar products, instead of deleting them.

12. Products missing from Google Shopping and AI Mode

Symptom: the page ranks in search but not in Shopping tabs or AI shopping answers.

Fix: connect the Google & YouTube channel, then fix disapprovals in Merchant Center (price mismatches, missing GTIN/MPN, placeholder images). Complete product data and structured data improve eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for Shopify products to appear on Google?

New products on an established store are often indexed within a few days to a few weeks. Brand-new stores can take longer. Submitting your sitemap and using URL Inspection > Request indexing in Search Console speeds up discovery, but does not guarantee indexing.

Why does Search Console say "Crawled - currently not indexed"?

Google fetched the page but decided not to index it yet, usually because it looks thin, duplicated or low-value compared with other pages. Unique, detailed product content and stronger internal links are the most reliable fixes.

Is "Alternate page with proper canonical tag" an error on Shopify?

Usually not. Shopify creates extra URLs for products (for example inside collections or with ?variant= parameters) that point to the main /products/ URL with a canonical tag. Google indexing only the canonical version is expected.

Why are some Shopify URLs blocked by robots.txt?

Shopify's default robots.txt blocks pages like cart, checkout, internal search and some filtered collection URLs to save crawl budget. That is normal. Only investigate if real product or collection URLs are blocked, for example by a custom robots.txt.liquid.

Can an SEO app stop my products from being indexed?

Yes. An app or theme edit can add a noindex tag, and the seo.hidden metafield hides a product from search engines and the sitemap. Check the page source for a robots noindex tag and review recent app installs.

Tesla's Direct-to-Consumer Strategy: 5 SEO & Loyalty Lessons for E-Commerce Brands (2026)

Updated September 27, 2026 - refreshed with new steps, examples and FAQ. Quick answer Tesla sells mainly direct to consumers - online and through company-owned stores rather than franchised dealers - and has historically spent far less on traditional advertising than other automakers, relying on product demand, word of mouth, a referral program and software updates that keep improving the product after purchase. For an online store, the lessons are: own the customer journey, simplify choices, turn customers into advocates, and keep improving live pages instead of launching and forgetting them. When you hear the name Tesla, your mind likely jumps straight to electric vehicles, controversial billionaires, rocket ships, and futuristic technology. But if you are a Shopify merchant, you should be looking at this automotive giant through a completely different lens. Tesla is not just a car manufacturer; it is a masterclass in direct-to-consumer (DTC) ecommerce, brand building, and customer ...
